Bimbo Canada WINS Another Clean50 Award!

Bimbo Canada is very pleased to announce that we have won another Clean50 award that recognizes our associates’ efforts to cut waste. Out of the only 24 projects selected for an award, our work was selected as second most impactful initiative of the year. Bimbo Canada is also only the second food manufacturer to be celebrated for our commitment to identifying every possible sustainability opportunity in our operations.

Bimbo Canada has set aggressive environmental targets to reduce food waste by 50%, water use by 29%, electricity use by 31% and thermal energy use by 12% all by 2025.

In partnership with Enviro-Stewards, detailed conservation assessments were conducted in all of Bimbo Canada’s bakeries and distribution centres that identified practical, affordable measures to help us achieve these targets.  Food waste, electricity, thermal energy and water use were measured at each facility, then practical conservation measures were identified, quantified and are in the process of being actioned.

The results of the assessments so far could potentially save:

  • 2,200 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions
  • $2,800,000 per year in operating costs
  • 5.5 million equivalent meals. For context, food banks in Ontario provide 4.5 million meals per year
  • 12% in thermal energy use

To inspire others and demonstrate environmental leadership, the assessment results were featured in a North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) case study and webinar about measuring and reducing food waste.

This is a Bimbo Canada Team award.  It is a recognition of all the work that our associates have completed to run a business that understands and believes that we need to work in ways that support and sustain our environment and the communities that we live and work in.

Canada’s Clean50 Awards are announced annually by Delta Management Group and the Clean50 organization to recognize those 50 individuals or small teams, from 16 different categories, who have done the most to advance the cause of sustainability and clean capitalism in Canada during the prior 2 years.  For more information about Clean50, click here.
