– Bimbo Canada is donating $7,500 to the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) as part of its commitment to being a partner with Indigenous communities to further reconciliation in Canada.
“Collaborating with the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, which aims to improve the lives of Indigenous people by building awareness, education and connections between all peoples in Canada, is a natural step on our path towards reconciliation,” said Teresa Schoonings, Senior Director, Sustainability and Government Relations. “We are truly inspired by DWF’s goal to build cultural understanding, which is also a belief brought to life through the everyday actions of our Bimbo Canada associates.”
Bimbo Canada’s donation will directly support education on Secret Path Week, a national movement commemorating the legacies of Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack, that takes place annually from October 17-22. Speakers from the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund talked to Bimbo Canada associates to help them understand how they can take reconciliACTION and further the conversation about the history and ongoing impact of residential schools.
“Secret Path Week is about creating a national platform to have safe conversations, learn more about Indigenous Peoples and create awareness about the true history and ongoing impact of residential schools. We are grateful that Bimbo Canada associates are learning and taking action to encourage all people in Canada to be part of the reconciliation movement,” said Sarah Midanik, President and CEO of the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund.
Since 2020, Bimbo Canada’s Diversity, Equity and Belonging Committee has taken several steps to create a business where people from different origins, geographies and experiences can develop and contribute to the transformation of our company, the baking industry, and the communities that associates live and work in.
